Error: 404 not found
Cause: You tried to open a specific page on a site. This error message will appear within any web browser when a requested page has been renamed, is no longer available on the site, or the address has been misspelt.
Solution: Try accessing the main site rather than a folder within the site (i.e. instead of: www.this-site.com/this-folder/this-page.htm try: www.this-site.com) This error is generated from the server of the remote site (i.e. www.this-site.com) and is not attributable to Powernet.
Error: 691 authentication failure
Cause: You entered an incorrect Username or Password when dialling up for a connection to the internet.
Solution: Passwords are CASE-SENSITIVE so re-enter the password and username, remembering to enter any changes in case.
Error: An error occurred when establishing Dial Up Networking to Powernet
Cause: You are trying to connect to the internet using Outlook Express and the settings for your account are not being recognised by your computer. This error maybe occurring if you have loaded a new piece of software onto your machine and this has corrupted your settings.
Solution: Check and update your settings using the following instructions. These instructions apply if you are using Outlook Express 5.X and a Powernet dial-up account.
- Click the Outlook Express icon on the main Windows 'Desktop' screen and Outlook Express will open
- Within Outlook Express, click Tools menu and from the drop down list click the Accounts menu item; the Internet Accounts sub-screen will appear
Click the Mail tab and the listing of your mail accounts will appear. Double click the option pop3.power.net.uk and the properties sub-screen for that account will appear
- At the properties sub-screen, click the Connection tab. Tick the box Always connect to this account using: and then click the drop down arrow at the end of the text box and select Powernet as your connection
- Click OK to save the changes
- Click Close to close the Internet Accounts sub-screen and return to the main Outlook Express screen
To check and update your news settings, if they have been set-up:
At the Internet Accounts sub-screen, click the News tab and then double click the option news.power.net.uk
- The properties sub-screen will appear; click the Connection tab. Tick the box Always connect to this account using: and then click the drop down arrow at the end of the text box and select Powernet as your connection
- Click OK to save the changes
- Click Close to close the Internet Accounts sub-screen, and return to the main Outlook Express screen
- Outlook Express will now prompt you to dial into Powernet when clicking on the SEND/RECEIVE button, which should stop the above error message.
Error: Content Advisor is missing or invalid
Cause: A content advisor monitors which sites are suitable for certain ages and will block those deemed unsuitable. This error message is being displayed because the content advisor settings have become corrupt.
Solution: Update the settings using the following instructions.
These instructions apply if you are using Internet Explorer 4.X :
- Click the Internet Explorer icon on the main Windows 'Desktop' screen and Internet Explorer will open to your default home page
- Within Internet Explorer, click the View menu and from the drop down list click the Internet Options menu item; the Internet Options sub-screen will appear
- Click the Security tab, and then at the Content Advisor section click the Settings button where you will be prompted for a password. Enter the password and click OK. If no password was ever set, leave the field blank and click OK
- The ratings screen will be displayed where you can reset the category options. For each of the options Language, Nudity, Sex and Violence, move the slider bar to the settings you wish to use
- Click Apply, and then OK to save these settings
- Click OK to close the Internet Options screen and close Internet Explorer
These instructions apply if you are using Internet Explorer 5.X.1 :
- Click the Internet Explorer icon on the main Windows 'Desktop' screen and Internet Explorer will open to your default home page
- Within Internet Explorer, click the Tools menu and from the drop down list click the Internet Options menu item; the Internet Options sub-screen will appear
- Click the Content tab, and then at the Content Advisor section click the Settings button where you will be prompted for the password. Enter the password and click OK. If no password was ever set, leave the field blank and click OK

Error: Error locating...
Cause: You are trying to view a site that requires a plug in to load correctly.
Solution: There are various plug ins available that web authors use to add various functionality to sites; these can include Shockwave, Flash, RealAudio and RealVideo. In order for the user to view a site correctly, these plug ins will need to be downloaded and installed. There is usually a link on the site that takes you to the plug in manufacturer's site, where you can download the files required.
Error: Modem in use by another application
Cause: You are trying to connect to the internet using a web browser or e-mail package but the modem is already busy because another communication program is accessing the serial port / modem; these programs may include:
- Comm Central
SuperVoice
RingCentral
- Phone Tools
- Real Player
Solution: Programs that are running on a computer will display icons at the base of the Windows Desktop screen. These icons will appear next to the clock or on the taskbar. To close these programs carry out the following actions:
- For programs/icons next to the clock:
- Move the mouse pointer to the icon and single click the right mouse button to reveal a list of options
- Select Close, Exit, Disable or Stop or whatever option is available to close the communication program
- For programs on the taskbar:
- Move the mouse pointer to the comms program icon and single click the right mouse button to reveal a list of options
- Click on File, then Exit or click the cross in the top right corner of the window to close it
When you have closed the program, try connecting to Powernet again. If you are still getting the same error message, you will need to contact your supplier or read your manual for help on disabling communication software.
Error: News connection error
Cause: You are trying to connect to the news server using Outlook Express and the settings are not being recognised by your computer.This error may occur if you have loaded a new piece of software onto your machine and this has corrupted your settings.
Solution:
- These instructions apply if you are using Outlook Express 5.X and a Powernet dial-up account:
- Click the Outlook Express icon on the main Windows 'Desktop' screen, and Outlook Express will open
- Within Outlook Express, click the Tools menu and from the drop down list click the Accounts menu item; the Internet Accounts sub-screen will appear
Click the News tab; then double click the option news.power.net.uk. The properties sub-screen will appear
Click the Server tab and check that news.power.net.uk appears in the Server Name field and that the 'This Server Requires Me To Logon' option is blank (i.e. not ticked)
- Click the Advanced tab and check that:
- 119 appears in the NEWS (NNTP) field
- 'This server requires a secure connection (SSL)' option is blank ( i.e. not ticked)
- 'Server Timeouts' slider should be set/moved to Short
- Click OK to save the changes
- Click Close to close the Internet Accounts sub-screen and return to the main Outlook Express screen
- Close Outlook Express and restart it. On restarting Outlook Express, your news settings should now be correct
