The following sequences of events gives you a step by step guide to creating a new dial-up connection, using Windows 2000 operating system, which will allow you to log on to the Internet or collect your e-mail.

At the Windows Desktop screen, double-click the My Computer icon and the My Computer sub-screen will be displayed.

At this screen, double-click the Control Panel icon and the Control Panel sub-screen will appear.

At the Control Panel sub-screen, double-click the Network and Dial-up Connections icon and the following window will be displayed.

Double-click the Make New Connection icon and the opening window of the Network Connection Wizard will be displayed. This wizard will take you through a series of steps to help you set-up your connection.

Click Next and at the following window select Dial-up to the Internet.

Click Next to continue to the next window and select I want to set up my Internet connection manually.

Click Next to proceed to the following window.

Select I connect through a phone line and a modem, and then click on Next.

At the Step 1 of 3 window, enter the area code and phone number in the relevant boxes, for Powernet enter 0845 0798096. The country/region name will default to the country set up in the regional settings within Windows - in this case it is defaulting to the UK, international dialling code 44. If you are dialling from outside the UK you will need to use the alterante number of +44 207 7881286.

While still on the Step 1 of 3 window, click on the Advanced button to display the Advanced Connection Properties sub-screen.

At the Connection tab, Connection type section, select the PPP option and tick the Disable LCP Extensions box.

At the Logon procedure section, select None.

Click on the Addresses tab to display the following window and configure the settings:

If you are connecting via a modem:

At the IP address section click Internet service provider automatically provides one. At the DNS server address section click Always use the following and enter our DNS server numbers

Primary DNS is 195.60.0.1 Secondary DNS is 195.60.0.5 If you are connecting via ISDN:

At the IP address section click Internet service provider automatically provides one. At the DNS server address section click My ISP automatically provides a Domain Name Server (DNS) address.

Click OK to save the settings and return to the Step 1 of 3 window. Click Next to continue to the Step 2 of 3 window.

At the User name field, enter your Powernet nodename in lowercase. At the next field, enter your case sensitive password.

Click Next to continue and the Step 3 of 3 window will be displayed:

Enter a connection name, for example Powernet; this will now complete the set up of your Windows 2000 Internet connection. Click Next and the following window will appear, giving you a choice to continue and set up an Internet Mail Account by selecting 'Yes', or to finish by selecting 'No'.

If you don't wish to set up an account at this time select 'No' and the following completion window will appear.

Select the Finish button to close the wizard.

If you select 'Yes' the following window will appear allowing you to set up a mail account. See the instruction for setting up an Outlook Express 5.X account.
