The following sequences of events gives you a step by step guide to creating a new dial-up connection using the Windows 98 operating system, which will allow you to log on to the Internet or collect your e-mail. Ensure that you have your Powernet nodename and password available before setting up the connection.

At the Windows Desktop screen, double-click the My Computer icon and the My Computer sub-screen will be displayed.

At this screen, double-click the Control Panel icon and the Control Panel sub-screen will appear.

Important Note: If you are on a LAN (Local Area Network), you should consult with your Network Administrator before going any further, as changing the numbers in this section could result in the loss of your LAN connectivity.

At the Control Panel sub-screen, double-click the Network icon and the following window will be displayed.

You need to have the following three network components installed:

Client For Microsoft Networks Dial Up Adapter TCP/IP (If there are any other components installed, you may safely ignore them).

If the components are not installed you will need to add them.

Adding Client for Microsoft Networking:

Click Add, click Client, click Add, click Microsoft in the left panel Select Client for Microsoft Networking in the right panel, then click OK

To add Dial-up Adapter:

Click Add, click Adapter, click Add, click Microsoft in the left panel Select Dial-up Adapter in the right panel, then click OK

To add TCP/IP:

Click Add, click Protocol, click Add, click Microsoft in the left panel Select TCP/IP in the right panel then click OK

Once the required components are installed, click on the Identification tab at the Network window, and enter a name for your computer, the workgroup and a description for your computer in each of the three boxes.

Once this is complete, click on the OK button.

You will now be prompted to insert the Windows 98 CD, after which you will need to restart your computer when asked. You now need to set up the Dial-Up Networking connection.

Configure the Dial Up Networking Connection

At the Windows Desktop window, double-click the My Computer icon and the My Computer sub-screen will be displayed.

At this screen, double-click the Dial-Up Networking icon to start the Dial-Up Networking wizard. If the Wizard does not start, double-click on the Make New Connection icon within the Dial Up Networking Window.

Enter Power Internet in the first field and ensure that the modem currently installed on your computer is selected in the Select a device field. Click Next.

At the next window make sure the area code is set to 0845, and type in the following telephone number - 0798096 - for Powernet. The country/region name will default to the country set up in the regional settings within Windows: in this case it is defaulting to the UK, international dialling code 44. If you are dialling from outside the UK you can use the alternate number of +44 207 7881286.

Click Next and then click Finish on the next window.

You will now need to edit the connection you have just created.

Edit the Dial Up Networking Connection

When you finish configuring your connection you will now need to edit the connection. When you close the wizard the Dial-Up Networking screen will still be open and a new icon will have appeared called Powernet (or Power Internet). Move the mouse pointer to this icon and click the right mouse button; the following menu will appear.

Select Properties and the following screen will be displayed:

Make sure the area code is set to 0845 and telephone number is 0798096 for Powernet. The country/region name will default to the country set up in the regional settings within Windows - in this case it is defaulting to the UK, international dialling code 44.

Now click on the Server Types tab to check the server settings.

Ensure that Enable software compression and TCP/IP are ticked; all the other boxes must be unticked. Click TCP/IP Settings to access the following screen.

Click the radio button Server assigned IP address. Click the radio button Specify name server addresses and enter our DNS server numbers:

Primary DNS is 195.60.0.1 Secondary DNS is 195.60.0.5 Click OK until you return to the Dial Up Networking window.

All that remains now is to test the connection by dialling into Powernet.

At the Dial Up Networking window double-click the Power Internet icon and the Connect window will be displayed:

In the Username field enter your nodename, always lowercase. Type your password into the password field remember that it is case sensitive. If you wish, you can put a tick in the Save Password box so you don't have to type it in every time. Click Connect and Windows 98 will connect to Powernet.
